Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is abbreviated to ICSI (it is the injection of a single sperm into an egg with the help of a microscope).

In ICSI, one single sperm cell is selected and injected directly into the ovaries’ cytoplasm. This is performed with a special microscope. Essentially, this is how the micro insemination process differs from normal IVF treatment.

An ICSI procedure is applied when:

  • Quality of the sperm is very poor;
  • Morphology of the sperm cells is poor;
  • High level of immune infertility – insemination of the ovaries was unsuccessful in a previous IVF.
