Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

During an IUI procedure, specially prepared male sperm is injected into the female uterus (pict. 1). An IUI procedure is quick and painless. For many couples, insemination means that they do not have to go through an in vitro fertilization. IUI may be performed during the natural ovulation cycle or by performing stimulation to encourage ovulation. This artificial insemination method is used for several reasons:

  • Quality of the male sperm is worse than normal
  • The woman has irregular ovulation or hasn’t it at all
  • Cause of couple’s infertility is unexplained.

The possibility of pregnancy is greater than normal, because the sperm cells are sprayed directly into the uterus at the most correct time. The probability of a successful pregnancy is approximately 10-15 percent.

IUI success depends on the reasons for infertility, age of both partners, duration of infertility, cycle correction and sperm parameters.

Most pregnancies occur within 4 treatment cycles. After 4-6 treatment cycles, other treatment possibilities should be considered.
IUI is an easy, effective, non-invasive treatment method. IUI can be performed after the couple has been examined thoroughly.
